Two residents of the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center were fatally shot Saturday night.

GRIFFIN, Georgia (CNN) -- A Georgia woman is accused of fatally shooting her two middle-aged sons Saturday night at a small-town nursing home.

Carol Carr, 63, who faces double murder charges, was a frequent visitor to SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Griffin, where sons Michael Randy Scott, 42, and Andy Byron Scott, 41, lived for the past four months, Griffin police Sgt. James Landham said.

Both suffered from an undisclosed, long-term degenerative disease, Landham said.

Carr, of nearby Hampton, shot the men with a small-caliber handgun shortly after 9 p.m., Landham said. Arrested by the officer responding to the call, the mother said she shot her sons because she didn't want them to suffer anymore, police said.

"She went freely and voluntarily with the police officer when he arrived and didn't show any violence toward anybody else," Landham said.

Landham said one of the brothers was flown to Atlanta Medical Center and the other to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Police in Griffin, a town of 23,000 about 40 miles south of Atlanta, were notified early Sunday that the two had died within an hour of each other, he said.

Grief counselors will be on hand Sunday to work with patients, their families and employees, nursing home administrator Chuck Brown said.

"Right now we're just concerned with helping our residents get over this and working with our employees," Brown said.
